Mohanlal escapes fatal accident

Megastar Mohanlal escaped a major injury when he fell 40 feet after a bike stunt went horribly wrong at the sets of Casanova in Hongkong on Thursday.

The actor was shooting for a chase scene on high crates in a warehouse. The stunt involved the actor sliding the bike on an inclined plane from the top of the boxes.

The maneuver, however, went wrong when the motorcycle skidded and the actor fell 40 feet with the bike to the safety bed that was placed in case of an accident.

Casanova director Rosshan Andrrews said that the mishap could have been fatal but thankfully the megastar escaped without any injuries.

The actor is known to do all its stunts himself and this time too despite the crew advising a dupe to perform the dangerous stunt, Mohanlal had insisted on doing it himself to bring the grit in the action.

Unfazed even after the injury-scare, the actor reportedly went ahead and shot few more scenes before canning the shoot for the day. Talk about total commitment!

Bollywood stunt director Allan Amin, of Dhoom and Dhoom2 fame, has been helming the action sequences of the movie, which boasts of several adrenaline-charging scenes.

Mohanlal has been doing all the stunts himself, including stoppie - a stunt where the rear wheel of the bike is off the ground. Lamborghinis, Porsche Boxsters, Ferraris and helicopters have all been used for some of the action sequences.

The action-thriller also has Shriya Saran, Laxmi Rai, Roma and Kannada actress Sanjjana to keep the mercury rising.

As the movie's name suggests Mohanlal would be playing the role of a playboy who owns a successful international chain of flower boutiques. In addition to charming the belles with his flamboyance he also tries to even the score with his foes using his primary weapon of choice: Love!

Venkatesh ready to take on Salman Khan

Superstar Salman Khan's "Bodyguard" created Box Office records all over the country during its Eid release. And now, it's going to be mana Venkatesh's turn to do the same.

Venky is currently shooting for the Telugu remake of the same film, with Trisha and Saloni, who play the female leads opposite him. The star is all praise for Sallu and the Hindi remake of "Bodyguard". "I have seen the Hindi film and I think Salman has done a fantastic job," says Venky.

But will Sallu's film have an effect on the Telugu remake; considering the Hindi flick released in Andhra Pradesh in many screens and raked in the moolah? Venkatesh dismisses it with a wave of his hand, saying, "I doubt the success of Salman's "Bodyguard" will affect the prospects of the Telugu remake at the BO. Though we have taken the basic concept from the original movie in Malayalam, we have incorporated a lot of changes into the script to suit the sensibilities of the Telugu movie audience."

Abhishek injured on Bol Bachchan sets

Abhishek Bach-chan’s insistence on performing his own stunts for Bol Bachchan proved a little too costly for the actor as he ended up with a nasty head injury, for which he had to be rushed to Mumbai to undergo surgery.

A source from the sets revealed that the incident took place during the first schedule of the film’s shoot at Jaipur on Tuesday. “A high-end action sequence was being shot and there was no body double available for that day. Abhi volunteered to do the stunt himself rather than have Rohit (Shetty) postpone the shoot for another day.”

Unfortunately, Junior B’s head hit a pole while performing the stunt and began bleeding profusely. “Abhi was administered first aid, but as it was a big injury, everyone felt that he needed to get it checked as well,” our source said. The concerns proved well-founded when, on presenting himself at a Mumbai hospital, Abhi was asked to immediately undergo a surgical procedure. “Yes, Abhi did need immediate treatment, but he is fine now and recuperating,” said the actor’s official spokesperson. The Bachchan family reportedly panicked when they heard the news, but settled down once Abhishek was back in Mumbai. The actor will be discharged on Thursday.

Injured Rana Daggubati comes home

Rana Daggubati got injured on Sunday when an action scene went wrong, while he was shooting for his upcoming Bollywood flick Department in Mumbai.

In this incident, he injured both his knees and got bruised on his shoulder. The incident took place when Rana was shooting for one of his action scenes at a steel factory on the outskirts of Mumbai on Sunday at 3pm.

In that particular sequence, Rana was supposed to jump over few boxes, but due to misscalculating the steps and getting the timing wrong, he fell directly on his knees and the impact was so high that the knee caps he was wearing for protection broke.

When asked what exactly happened, Rana said, “We had already done few other similar stunts, which went on well. But in this particular scene, the timing of the jump went wrong and I fell directly on my knees. My right knee felt the impact, due to which even the knee cap I wore broke. My left knee is not that bad, but it hurts. I have a big, purple bruise on my right shoulder.”

Poor Rana couldn’t rush to the hospital to get a doctor to look at him because, there was no medical help close by! “A few fighters who were shooting along with me put some ice packs on my knees and shoulder and we shot till 5pm and wrapped up.”

When asked why he wanted to risk aggravating the injury, Rana who is now on crutches says, “I wanted to wrap up the shooting soon, because I didn’t want to get stuck in the Ganesh Immersion traffic.”

The actor who reported back to the sets on Monday to shoot his first shot with Amitabh Bachchan, will now take it easy and take a break for a couple of days. He is also not doing any action sequences for a bit, will only be doing close ups till his knees heal. Rana is coming back to Hyderabad on Tuesday to rest at home.

Dilraju new multi starter films

Kajal Agarwal’s topless picture morphed

Actress Kajal Agarwal has a good reason to be fuming and fretting the way she is.

FHM, a Mumbai-based men’s magazine has morphed her picture as a topless girl to gain some “cheap publicity” by stooping to the lowest practices of yellow journalism.

Kajal who arrived in B-town with the smashing success of Singham, had done a photo shoot for the magazine, but her fabricated topless picture was published on the cover, thereby tarnishing her image.

Her sister and actress Nisha Agarwal says that the gimmick has done a lot of damage to the actor’s image, adding that Kajal would never dream of doing such a thing.

She says the family was upset since they were getting innumerous calls from friends, family and well-wishers from the industry, expressing shock over the issue. “We had to explain to them that it was a morphed picture and exposed the unprofessional conduct of the publishing house,” she adds.

The actress is infuriated and is planning to take action against the magazine and halt the issue of the magazine from hitting the stands.

Industry bigwigs thought that Kajal had turned bold in a desperate attempt to get B-town offers. However, it all turned out to be a scam not involving her at all.

Tollywood stars are raking in more cash

Tollywood stars are raking in more cash than their Kollywood counterparts; notwithstanding that Tamil films have a larger market.

With the exception of mighty Rajinikanth, price tags of around Rs 10 crore on three top Telugu stars Mahesh Babu, Jr NTR and Pawan Kalyan, make them costliest film stars in the South. Ravi Teja, Allu Arjun, Prabhas and Naga Chaitanya are not far behind this elite group. They too are expecting to be paid above Rs 3-Rs 4 crore.

Is this raise sustainable and justified? “Few Telugu stars have cut down their remunerations since the market hasn’t expanded proportionately and overseas, the market for Telugu films is stuck at Rs 3 crore,” argues producer Aditya Ram.

However, sources close to the stars disagree claiming that superstars’ films are traded for Rs 40 crore, excluding satellite rights of Rs 6 crore.

“It’s bad planning and unnecessary wastage that increases production cost which is often between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh per day and not the stars remunerations. Budgets escalate due to delays but our pay packets remain the same even when we end up spending more days on the same film,” defends Ram Charan Tej who is believed to be earning Rs 8 crore per film, which even senior colleagues in Chennai — Surya, Vikram and Ajith — don’t command.

“The budgets of mass heroes are always expanding and with good marketing and generating hype, producers can easily recover their costs,” says a source close to Jr NTR.

Most stars believe their hefty pay cheques are justified. “I am paid what I deserve and it’s affordable,” quips Ravi Teja who allegedly charges Rs 7 crore per film.

Allu Arjun who is said to be getting Rs 6 crore per film, modestly says, “I understand the problems of the producers but I don’t believe in price tags... I prefer a nominal hike.”

“More than the pay cheque, its an exciting script and the team that beckons me,” points out Naga Chaitanya, barely few years old in the industry with a price tag already escalated from Rs 3 crore to Rs 5 crore.”

Telugu heroes are on a roll. Gnanavel Raja, producer and cousin of Tamil stars, Surya and Karthi, says, “Although the Tamil industry has expanded, we always keep in mind the viability of the film before deciding the payments.”

K.C.N. Chandrasekaran, president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, says, “Kannada stars haven’t crossed the Rs 1 crore mark because our business is limited to Rs 5 crore to Rs 6 crore which makes our stars still affordable,” he concludes.

CBI may quiz Mahesh Babu, wife on Emaar

Officials of the CBI continued interrogating the vice-chairman of Jagathi Publications, Mr Vijaya Sai Reddy, on Sunday.

CBI SP H. Venkatesh quizzed him for about five-and-a-half hours in the Jagan Mohan Reddy-disproportionate assets case.

According to unconfirmed reports, some filmstars who had bought villas in the land developed by Emaar MGF at Gachibowli have also been issued notices by the CBI in connection with the Emaar case.

The Bureau is likely to question filmstar Mahesh Babu, his wife Ms Namrata, Ram Charan Tej, Ms Galla Padmavathi, daughter of minister Galla Aruna Kumari, and representatives of Brahmani Steels.

In its FIR, the CBI had alleged that the villa plots were sold at throwaway prices of Rs 5,000 per sq. yd. while the registration char-ges itself were Rs 12,000.

The CBI will question Mahesh Babu and his wife Namrata on September 14, Ram Charan Tej on September 15 and Ms Galla Padmavathi on September 16.

When contacted, CBI joint director, Mr V.V. Lakshminarayana, said he would have to verify the details.
